Boback Votes to Ban ‘Blizzard’ Bath Salts

Rep. Karen Boback (R-Columbia/Luzerne/Wyoming) today voted in favor of a measure that would place chemicals commonly found in concentrated bath salts on the state’s controlled substance list.  These bath salts, known as “blizzard,” are being used as synthetic cocaine, with dangerous consequences.

“We have to ensure that hazardous substances like these are not readily accessible to Pennsylvania’s children,” said Boback.   “It is important for the state to be ever-vigilant when new drugs like this enter the market because unscrupulous people will always look for ways to entice individuals who have substance abuse problems and those who are naive to the dangers of seemingly common household substances.”

In addition to banning the chemicals found in these bath salts, which include 3,4-Methylenedioxymethcathinone (Methylone); 3,4-Methyenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV); 4-Methylmethcathinone (Mephedrone); 4-Methoxymethcathinone; 4-Fluoromethcathinone; and 3-Fluoromethcathinone, the measure also add salvia divinorum, which produces an effect similar to LSD, to the state’s list of controlled substances.

Boback noted that the types of bath salts available at major retailers, such as Walmart or Target, do not contain the chemicals banned by this legislation.  The substances in question are typically sold in tobacco shops and hemp stores.

House Bill 365 passed the House unanimously and will now move to the Senate for consideration.
