Boback Supports House Budget Which Restores Education Funding

Rep. Karen Boback (R-Columbia/Luzerne/Wyoming) today released the following statement regarding the House passage of a budget bill that would restore many of the education cuts proposed in Gov. Tom Corbett’s initial budget:

“The governor’s budget proposal, especially as it relates to education, was a devastating blow for my district. I could not support the cuts made to basic and higher education in the original budget plan.  My vote today is a vote against the governor’s proposal and for an attempt to restore significant funds to our K-12 education programs and higher education.  Although this is just one of many steps in the budget process, it is a step in the right direction because it reflects the need to restore important education funding. In the current bill, $100 million would be restored to basic education funding, $100 million would be returned to block grants, and millions more would be reinstated for other basic and higher education programs.

“Today’s vote signifies a step in the process, but we are far from the finish line.  The budget will now go to the Senate for its consideration, and I believe further amendments will be made. It is imperative that a state budget agreement comes together soon, as school districts need to finalize their own budgets.  It is the job of the Legislature to make sure the state budget meets the needs of the Commonwealth, is fiscally responsible, and is completed by June 30.

“I do not believe that school district budgets should be balanced on the backs of the homeowner. I will continue to monitor education funding and the priorities outlined by the people of my district as this legislation makes its way through the process.”
