Combating Elder Abuse Begins With Awareness, Says Boback
6/10/2013

House Resolution 343 designates June 15 as Elder Abuse Awareness Day

HARRISBURG – In an effort to protect some of the most vulnerable citizens across the Commonwealth, the Pennsylvania House of Representatives today unanimously passed a resolution authored by Rep. Karen Boback (R-Luzerne/Wyoming/Columbia) designating June 15 as Elder Abuse Awareness Day in Pennsylvania.

“Elder abuse is a growing problem nationwide and raising awareness about this issue within our community helps in the battle against it,” said Boback, also a member of the Luzerne County Elder Abuse Task Force. “I want the senior population to know that help is available to them, and I also want the perpetrators to know that Luzerne, Wyoming and Columbia counties – and all of Pennsylvania – have no tolerance for their despicable behavior.”

Research estimates that every five seconds an elder is abused, and the vast majority of those cases are left unreported. Last year, approximately 18,500 elder abuse reports were submitted to the state Department of Aging. However, state officials believe that number is drastically underestimated.

Elder abuse comes in many forms including physical, mental and sexual abuse; neglect of care; abandonment; and becoming more common, financial exploitation.

Any person who believes that a senior citizen is being abused, neglected, exploited or abandoned is encouraged to call the statewide elder abuse hotline at 1-800-490-8505. The hotline is open 24 hours a day.

Boback’s comments regarding elder abuse awareness can be found on her YouTube channel at YouTube.com/RepBoback. For more legislative information, visit her website at RepBoback.com.
