Boback Veteran Benefits Bill Passes House Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee
HARRISBURG – The House Veterans Affairs and Emergency Preparedness Committee voted unanimously today to pass House Bill 1742, which was authored by Rep. Karen Boback (R-Columbia/Luzerne/Wyoming). The bill provides for a partial exclusion of veterans’ compensation benefits from income calculations.

“This is a measure that quite a few veterans have been active in trying to change,” Boback said. “I’m very happy that the committee voted in favor of the bill and look forward to consideration by the full House.”

The bill states that only 50 percent of veterans’ compensation benefits can be used to determine their eligibility for Pennsylvania’s benefit programs, including tax and fee exemptions, or rebates. The bill also extends the exclusion of the veteran’s compensation benefits to that person’s unmarried surviving spouse. The exclusion mirrors the 50 percent exclusion now available for the state’s popular Property Tax and Rent Rebate program.

“This will apply to a wide variety of programs across the state,” Boback added. “This bill, if passed into law, will provide a great deal of assistance to veterans.”
