Boback: Governor’s Budget Plan Includes Record Funding for Education
HARRISBURG – Rep. Karen Boback (R-Columbia/Luzerne/Wyoming) issued the following statement regarding Gov. Tom Corbett’s $29.4 billion proposal for the upcoming fiscal year:
“This is the start of a long discussion between the House and Senate on Pennsylvania’s budget priorities for the upcoming fiscal year. It is also the start of a long period of examination by the House Appropriations Committee, on which I serve. This particular plan is based on revenue collections up to this point in the year and on projections for the next several months through June. Adjustments can always be made to this plan if revenues outperform expectations.
“This budget proposal includes record funding for education, at $10.3 billion. I’m encouraged to see an increase of $363 million over last year’s budget plan. Another positive aspect regarding education is the planned increase in funding for special education and pre-kindergarten programs, which are so essential for the children of our Commonwealth.
“Last year, Gov. Corbett signed an extension for the Children’s Health Insurance Program. This program will continue through 2015. In this budget plan, the governor also proposed a $5.5 million increase for the program so that it can provide health insurance for more than 10,000 additional children.
“I look forward to working with the governor to deliver an on-time budget that spends within the taypayers’ means, but yet funds essential programs for the year ahead.”
