New Child Protection Laws Focus of Seminar, Boback Says
5/15/2015
HARRISBURG- Rep. Karen Boback (R-Lackawanna/Luzerne/Wyoming) is inviting anyone in the 117th Legislative District who volunteers or works with children to a meeting to learn more about Pennsylvania’s new child protection laws. The event will take place on Thursday, May 21, at the Brooks Theater Auditorium at Keystone College, located at 1 College Road in La Plume. The seminar will be held in conjunction with the college and is scheduled for 6-8 p.m.

With the enactment of these laws, many of Pennsylvania’s volunteers and workers now must obtain a criminal background check and child abuse clearance before directly working with children and are required to report suspected child abuse to the proper authorities to avoid facing criminal prosecution. Anyone who volunteers or works with children, including those at day care centers, people involved in sports involving youth and Sunday school teachers, are subject to the new rules. The new requirements take effect July 1.

To ensure organizations and businesses fully understand these new laws, Boback has arranged this meeting where the Department of Human Services will explain the new changes and provide recommendations on how to best comply with them. The event will include a presentation from Jacqui Maddon and Brian Waugh from the Northeast Regional Office of Children, Youth and Families. There will also be an opportunity to arrange training through the Victims’ Resource Center on reporting child abuse under state law.

“I want to issue one more reminder to residents about this very important event,” Boback said. “There have been plenty of questions about these new laws and I want to help local businesses, organizations and individuals understand the changes and how to better protect children and themselves.”

To RSVP for the meeting, please contact Boback’s Tunkhannock office at (570) 836-4777.
