Counterfeit Airbag Prevention Bill Advances to Senate, Says Boback
HARRISBURG – A bill intended to prevent counterfeit airbags from being installed in vehicles, introduced by Rep. Karen Boback (R-Lackawanna/Luzerne/Wyoming) recently passed the House.

The bill would make it unlawful for an individual to knowingly make, distribute, sell, install or re-install a counterfeit or nonfunctional airbag. It would also prevent the tampering of a readiness indicator light.

Since 1998, the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act has required all cars and light trucks to have airbags on both sides of the front seat. Today, airbags are standard equipment in over 100 million cars and trucks.

“This bill, if passed, would keep Pennsylvanians safer. Several other states have passed similar legislation that would protect consumers from the installation of potentially fatal counterfeit airbags. Airbags are intended to be lifesaving devices and consumers should not have to worry about such devices causing harm,” said Boback.

The bill now moves to the Senate for consideration.
